The Dental Crown Process

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a tooth to restore function and appearance. At Prescott Family Dentistry, they are often used after a large cavity, broken tooth, or root canal procedure. They also replace missing teeth as part of a dental implant treatment. Although dental crowns can be made from several materials, they are most commonly made from porcelain fused with metal. This material mimics the appearance of natural teeth while providing the necessary strength for restoration. Metal-free options are also available for patients concerned about their restorations' aesthetic appearance.

The Dental Crowns Procedure

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength to its original state. This restoration can strengthen a tooth that is brittle, cracked, or fractured, and it can also replace a large filling when there is not enough remaining structure to support a filling. The dentist will prepare the tooth to support a crown by removing any decay or old fillings before filing down the surface of the tooth to better fit the crown over it. An impression will then be taken of the prepared tooth and sent to an outside lab for fabrication. Before you leave, a temporary crown will be placed to protect the prepared tooth until your next visit. At your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent one will be placed. Our dentist will check the fit and color of your crown and make any necessary adjustments before it is cemented in place.

Advantages of Dental Crowns

Improved Appearance

The crown restores the appearance of the tooth damaged by decay or trauma. It also covers discoloration or staining. An all-metal crown may be chosen for a tooth seen when smiling. Otherwise, a white porcelain one will be used.

Support for a Weak or Broken Tooth

A crown holds together the remaining parts of the cracked or damaged tooth. This prevents further damage and improves the chances that the natural root can heal properly.

After Root Canal Therapy

After a root canal, a portion of the natural tooth is removed. This leaves the hollowed-out area weak and prone to further problems. Once the procedure is completed, a dental crown is placed over the tooth to protect it from further damage.

When a Large Filling Is Needed

Unlike smaller fillings, larger fillings are often not strong enough to restore the tooth to its former strength. Sometimes, a crown is used instead. It is also used if the filling becomes dislodged.

To Anchor a Bridge in Place

A dental bridge requires at least one tooth on either side for support. These are called abutment teeth. After the bridge is placed, a crown is fixed to the abutment teeth to protect and improve their appearance.

A dental crown is a type of restoration that completely covers a tooth, restoring function and appearance. To learn more about dental crowns, visit Prescott Family Dentistry at 1860 Coltharp Rd., Fort Mill, South Carolina 29715, or call (803) 802-7878.
