The Dental Crowns Procedure

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength to its original state. This restoration can strengthen a tooth that is brittle, cracked, or fractured, and it can also replace a large filling when there is not enough remaining structure to support a filling. The dentist will prepare the tooth to support a crown by removing any decay or old fillings before filing down the surface of the tooth to better fit the crown over it. An impression will then be taken of the prepared tooth and sent to an outside lab for fabrication. Before you leave, a temporary crown will be placed to protect the prepared tooth until your next visit. At your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent one will be placed. Our dentist will check the fit and color of your crown and make any necessary adjustments before it is cemented in place.

Improved Appearance

The crown restores the appearance of the tooth damaged by decay or trauma. It also covers discoloration or staining. An all-metal crown may be chosen for a tooth seen when smiling. Otherwise, a white porcelain one will be used.

To Anchor a Bridge in Place

A dental bridge requires at least one tooth on either side for support. These are called abutment teeth. After the bridge is placed, a crown is fixed to the abutment teeth to protect and improve their appearance.
